Suozzi fends off GOP jabs after looking sleepy at State of the Union speech

WASHINGTON — As images spread online of Rep. Tom Suozzi with his eyes closed during the State of the Union address, the Glen Cove Democrat responded that "I have always had a hard time staying awake watching reruns."
Republicans were quick to slam Suozzi after he was captured Tuesday night in video clips posted on social media of him nearly dozing during the speech — or at least looking very bored.
The shots show Suozzi with his eyes closed, but then he opens them and looks exasperated.
"Nassau County deserves better than someone asleep at the wheel," jabbed Republican National Committee spokesman Kristen Cianci, in a posting showing Suozzi.
This State of the Union sequence occurred less than three weeks after Trump injected himself into what is likely to be a key congressional race this fall, endorsing Republican Michael LiPetri for Suozzi’s congressional seat. Suozzi defeated LiPetri in 2024.
"What can I say?" LiPetri said in a statement. "Tired Tom isn’t up for the job."
At nearly two hours, President Donald Trump's speech was the longest State of the Union on record.
