Amber F. Brach-Williams, Council Member, Town of Shelter Island
AMBER F. BRACH-WILLIAMS
Republican
BACKGROUND:
- Brach-Williams, 59, of Shelter Island, is seeking her second full term on the Town Board. She was elected in 2016 to complete an unexpired term. She is a CPA with a small practice.
- She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting at Binghamton University and a master’s in business administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
- She is treasurer for the Shelter Island Fire District and serves as deputy supervisor on the board.
ISSUES:
- Water quality continues to be an issue, and she said the town needs to keep working to lower nitrate levels with what she calls a reasoned, balanced approach. She would like to see the town authorize a water modeling study to better understand the island's water resources.
- On the need for community housing, she said, "I have moved five times in eight years — I know the difficult rental market here." The town needs projects to develop more affordable housing units.
- Brach-Williams said she will look at legislation to allow additional accessory apartments. She said that adding kitchens to some accessory apartments, for example, would enable year-round use.
