DOROTHY L. GOOSBY

Democratic

BACKGROUND:

  • Goosby, 83, is running for her eighth term on the Democratic line. Goosby has served on the town board for 21 years after she was first elected in 1999.
  • She won a landmark civil rights lawsuit that required the town to create voting districts to increase representation for disenfranchised minority communities.
  • Goosby represents the Village of Hempstead, Uniondale, and Roosevelt. She was the first African American elected to the Town Board.

ISSUES:

  • Goosby said she wants to fix the broken sewer system in her district, including the Village of Hempstead and on private property for homeowners.
  • She said she will work with the villages to assist homeowners with costly repairs. Goosby also said she wants to regulate and lower water prices.
  • Goosby said she wants to address inequities in education while the majority of charter schools are in her district. She said the Hempstead school district superintendent is doing well managing density with the lowest median income in the county, a lack of state funding and tax breaks for developments.
