DARRIN GREEN

Democratic

BACKGROUND:

  • Green, 54, of Central Islip, is a correction officer and instructor at the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department. He also is running on the Working Families Party line.
  • He is president of the Long Island chapter of Blacks in Law Enforcement of America. He also is president of the Nassau County Sheriff Guardians, an organization made up of Black correction officers.
  • Green graduated from Hempstead High School and studied digital computer technology at the Suburban Technical School in Hempstead.

ISSUES:

  • Green pledges to improve communications with residents and proposes to move town hall meetings, currently held in the afternoons, when he says most people are at work, to the evenings to allow more residents to participate in civic affairs.
  • He wants to make residents and business owners feel safer and proposes to have park rangers, who are part of the town public safety department, patrol downtown neighborhoods on foot. That would make it easier, Green says, for park rangers to build relationships with residents and business owners.
  • Green promises to find better ways to deliver the same level of services without raising taxes because residents, who have seen their town taxes rise 37% in the last six years, are already paying the highest town taxes in Suffolk County.
