EDMUND J. SMYTH

Republican

BACKGROUND:

  • Smyth, 50, of Lloyd Harbor, is also running on the Conservative Party line.
  • He was elected to the Huntington Town Board in 2017 and was recently appointed deputy supervisor. He touts as his accomplishments enacting term limits, working with the police department to enable the town's fire marshal and code enforcement officers to stop unsafe housing conditions and overcrowded homes.
  • He is a U.S. Marine Corps reserve veteran. He has a law degree from New York Law School and has practiced law for the past 24 years. He is the principal of his namesake law firm on Main Street.

ISSUES:

  • Smyth said he would continue to stop overdevelopment in Huntington’s downtown areas through zoning-code compliance and incentivizing developers to focus on blighted and underused properties before any new development takes place.
  • He will continue to make upgrades to the town’s infrastructure and sewer system without increasing the town’s debt load.
  • He will also continue to preserve open space, and work with town stakeholders on clean water and environmental initiatives. He will push for the creation of an affordable housing trust fund that would impact more applicants than the current system.
