Brian M. Sherman, Superintendent of Highways, Town of Shelter Island
BRIAN M. SHERMAN
Conservative
BACKGROUND:
- Sherman, 55, of Shelter Island, is seeking his second full term as highway superintendent. He is running on the Republican and Democratic lines.
- A highway department employee since 1989, Sherman was appointed in 2019 to finish out the former highway superintendent's term.
- He has worked as a foreman in the highway department and at the transfer station and has helped cap and close the landfill, build the new highway building and run the hazardous materials and the scale house programs.
ISSUES:
- Sherman said he would work to adjust the town's solid waste budget and try to recycle more items. During the pandemic, the island's population rose and the recycling center reduced the number of items it accepted and closed two days a week to catch up, he said.
- He would work to find a larger market for mulch from trees that town crews clear. He would seek new ways to recycle concrete that used to be ground up and sold as driveway base.
- He would continue to repave roads, seeking state funds to help, and to upgrade the town's ability to catch stormwater runoff.
