BACKGROUND:
- Calarco, 41, a county legislator, is seeking reelection to a 6th and final term. He is also running on the Working Families Party line.
- He is presiding officer of the Suffolk County Legislature. His peers chose him to lead the 18-member body in 2020 and again this year.
- Calarco earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Dowling College in Oakdale in 2001 and master’s degree in public administration from Stony Brook University in 2003.
ISSUES:
- Calarco pledges to improve transportation networks by bringing bus rapid transit, a bus-based public transportation system designed to improve capacity and reliability, to Suffolk’s downtowns.
- He promises to work to secure millions in federal and state funding to help pay for a sewer project that would allow about 500 homes to connect to the Patchogue sewage treatment plant.
- Calarco says he wants to identify the "right" opioid treatment and abatement programs to fund, using $150 to $200 million that pharmaceutical companies agreed to pay Suffolk County to settle a lawsuit filed by the county in which the county alleged that the businesses fueled the opioid epidemic on Long Island.
