NADIA HOLUBNYCZYJ

Democratic

BACKGROUND:

  • Holubnyczyj, 53, of Floral Park, worked as a speech-language pathologist and recently as a clerk in a local school. She is a longtime activist in her second run for public office after losing to incumbents in the 2019 race for Floral Park Village trustee. She was president of the Floral Park Hillcrest Civic Association and has the Working Families Party endorsement.
  • She said she worked to defeat a proposed video lottery casino at Belmont Park and organized a campaign that led to the $10 million installation of three elevators at the Floral Park train station.
  • During the pandemic, she said, she launched the Nassau chapter of Frontline Foods and raised $26,000 for restaurants to keep employees on the job by preparing meals for hospital workers. After a fire damaged at least 10 Floral Park businesses last year, her crowdsourcing garnered $39,000 for the victims, she said.

ISSUES:

  • Holubnyczyj puts community outreach as her first priority, including visiting chambers of commerce to discuss ways of filling empty stores. She would regularly hold town halls and mobile and virtual office hours.
  • She sees herself as a voice for the "marginalized" and would set up a transit advisory group to improve service for seniors, veterans and the disabled. She said they do not receive the same level of service as the able-bodied.
  • She believes certain communities have been bypassed for years on funding and would ensure that block grants given to her district are distributed equitably.
