BACKGROUND:

• McCarty, 40, of Port Washington, is making her first run for public office after working as a legislative aide for then-State Sen. Elaine Phillips of Flower Hill and North Hempstead Town Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio.

• She was in primary school when she started working weekends in her family’s manufacturing business. She said she learned every aspect of the family business, from sweeping floors to operating forklifts, and ended up as secretary-treasurer.

• She has devoted time to nonprofits, including Empowering Young Professionals of Long Island, which mentors minority youth.

ISSUES:

• McCarty would hold "sip and shop" gatherings at stores to listen to business owners and her version of Bingo, in which shoppers win prizes after publicizing purchases on social media.
• She would create a quality task force that looks for and fixes problems instead of waiting for people to report issues, such as potholes and broken park benches.
• Scrapping and redoing the county’s reassessments for property taxes is a priority for McCarty, who believes having an elected assessor would lead to more accountability
