ASTRID FIDELIA

Democratic

BACKGROUND:

  • Fidelia, 54, is a licensed real estate broker who is taking on her Republican opponent for the second time, albeit in a different race. Last time, it was a 2013 race for Islip Town Council.
  • Fidelia has served on the Suffolk County Long Island Board of Realtors. She also cofounded the Haitian-American Political Action Committee, along with Stand Up To Poverty, a nonprofit organization that recruits and trains leaders in anti-poverty efforts.
  • She currently serves as president of the Islip Rotary Club and treasurer of the Haitians United Association.
  • Fidelia served previously on Islip Town’s Foreign Trade Zone Authority, and worked for Anchor Capital, an international trade services company.

ISSUES:

  • Fidelia says her priorities are "community advocacy," "environmental leadership," and support for families. She says this includes expanding county services for families and children and creating more commuter-friendly workforce housing options locally.
  • She wants to expand use of electric-powered buses, protect water quality and encourage communities to plan resiliency projects for sea-level rise.
  • She wants to use public transit to promote and showcase the county and Islip. On her website, she says concerns about the local environment and overdevelopment remain unaddressed.
