- Cheng worked as an attorney in the Family Court and law guardian bureaus of the Legal Aid Society from 1995 to 2001, and served as a Suffolk County assistant county attorney from September 2001 through December 2002.
- Cheng earned his undergraduate degree from Stony Brook University in 1990 and received his law degree from Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in 1994.
