Donald X. Clavin Jr., Supervisor, Town of Hempstead
DONALD X. CLAVIN JR.
Republican
BACKGROUND:
- Clavin, 52, of Garden City, is also running on the Conservative, Tax Revolt and Independence party lines.
- He is seeking reelection to his second two-year term as Hempstead supervisor.
- He previously served as the town’s receiver of taxes for 19 years.
ISSUES:
- Clavin cited "tax relief" as his top priority. He said he froze town taxes for 2021 and is proposing a tax cut for 2022. Clavin said he saved $1 million in spending by slashing the supervisor’s staff budget by half.
- He said he is dedicating $75 million to road repaving and infrastructure upgrades. He is also spending $10 million on parks improvements.
- Clavin led the town through the COVID-19 pandemic, managing $131 million in federal aid including providing PPE kits for businesses, COVID-19 tests and vaccines for the public, and air filters for senior citizens. Clavin and the town board created provisions for outdoor dining to help restaurants cope with the impact of the pandemic, he said.
