PATRICIA BERGIN-WEICHBRODT

Republican

BACKGROUND:

  • Bergin-Weichbrodt, 50, of East Islip, is a 12-year Islip Town councilwoman. She is leaving her post this year because of term limits. She is also running on the Conservative Party line.
  • Previously, she was a reporter at News12 Long Island and CBS News, where she says she also served as anchor.
  • Bergin-Weichbrodt earned a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1994 and a master’s degree in broadcast journalism in 1996 at New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury.

ISSUES:

  • Bergin-Weichbrodt pledges to work to improve Suffolk County’s fiscal health by identifying and cutting "wasteful spending" and will ensure that federal pandemic aid is allocated in areas where needed.
  • She promises to work toward cleaning up Suffolk’s waterways by mandating the installation of "cleaner" septic systems and making investment in the sewer system.
  • Bergin-Weichbrodt says she would expand efforts to seed and grow shellfish as a way to clean coastal waters. She wants to seed canals along the South Shore with clams to help remove excess nitrogen from waters.
