GAITLEY STEVENSON-MATHEWS

Democratic

BACKGROUND:

  • Stevenson-Mathews, 60, of Glen Cove, is a former theater producer with a background in administration, budgeting and personnel management. He is a voice and speech coach and a 30-year union member (AFL-CIO).
  • He is running for his second term as city councilman.
  • He earned his bachelor's degree from Berea College, his MFA from Southern Methodist University and has additional administrative training via San Francisco’s Support Center for Nonprofit Management.

ISSUES:

  • If reelected, Stevenson-Mathews said he would advocate for fiscal prudence. He said this led to his vote against the budget and refusal to pierce the tax cap.
  • He supports smart residential development, including an affording housing component for young families and seniors. He would also address transportation and infrastructure challenges to make the city more accessible for all residents including expanding bus service, bike trails and green spaces.
  • He would explore public-private partnerships to fund city enrichment (such as a community center) at no or minimal cost to taxpayers.
