ELLEN W. BIRNBAUM

Democratic

BACKGROUND:

  • Birnbaum, 66, of Great Neck, has worked in government most of her career and seeks a fifth term. She is also on the Common Sense Party line.
  • She was director for North Hempstead Town’s Office of Intermunicipal Coordination and served on the board of the Water Authority of Great Neck North.
  • She received her bachelor’s degree in consumer economics and public policy from Cornell University and a master’s degree in finance from New York University.

ISSUES:

  • Birnbaum would continue focusing on public safety, including meeting the needs of police and pursuing "traffic calming" projects. She noted the reopening of the Sixth Precinct as one of her chief accomplishments.
  • She supports infrastructure and public transit spending. She would like to see more bike paths and would not endorse any cuts to the public bus routes.
  • Birnbaum would like to expand sewer services to replace cesspools and follow up on the $150,000 feasibility study approved this year for a possible sewer district in Great Neck.
