Zephyr Teachout, the woman who tried to wrest the liberal Working Families Party endorsement from Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo last year, has endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders for president.

Teachout said Tuesday that the national endorsement of Sanders is a huge boost for the campaign against front-runner Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

Polls, however, have shown Clinton extending her lead in recent weeks.

”Our democracy is in crisis,” Teachout said. “Bernie Sanders is a fearless, experienced leader capable of seeing the truth and standing up to big private power, even when it is almost impossibly hard.”

Teachout, who lived in Vermont before moving to New York to become a professor at Fordham Law School, said she has known the Vermont senator since 1993.

Cuomo has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president.

Cuomo defeated Teachout in a surprisingly close fight for the Working Families Party last year and defeated her again in the Democratic primary.
