Port Washington LIRR line delayed until Monday due to bridge demolition

Those planning to ride the Long Island Rail Road's Port Washington line can expect to add at least a half-hour to their travel time this weekend as crews demolish the Colonial Road Bridge near Great Neck Station.

Trains between New York and Great Neck will run hourly, instead of half-hourly, and buses will replace train service between Great Neck and the Manhasset, Plandome and Port Washington stations, adding 25 minutes to travel times.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials expect the disruption to last from 12:04 a.m. tomorrow to 3:15 a.m. on Monday, officials said.

MTA spokeswoman Meredith Daniels said officials scheduled the demolition around Mets games and other high-traffic events to minimize disruption on the branch, which carries about 18,000 passengers each weekend.

The demolition is part of the $45 million Colonial Road Improvement Project. Daniels said further disruptions are possible while crews replace the bridge in the next year. Visit mta.info/lirr/colonialroad/ for updates.
