About 850 Long Island customers were still without power early Monday, PSEG Long Island said, after fierce winds battered the region, knocking down trees and power lines. But company officials said they expected most customers to have their power restored later in the morning.
Earlier Sunday, about 10,000 customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties had no power, as wind gusts of up to 45 mph wreaked havoc.
About 12:30 a.m., the majority of the 848 remaining outages -- 554 -- were in the Town of Hempstead; 210 in Oyster Bay; 35 in North Hempstead; 16 in Smithtown; and 13 in Islip. There were 49 reported outages across Suffolk County. Ten outages were reported in the Rockaways.
Jeffrey Weir, a PSEG Long Island spokesman, said extra crews, including some brought in from PSEG New Jersey, would work "into the overnight" to restore power.
"We have crews on through the night. We're borrowing crews from our friends across the river -- 15 additional crews," said Weir, adding that the wind also makes it difficult for the workers. "It looks like the wind advisory is being lifted, which will definitely help get our customers up restored faster."
Winds also knocked down trees on railroad tracks, delaying trains Sunday morning. A downed tree delayed Long Island Rail Road service between Farmingdale and Deer Park.
