The biggest lottery jackpot ever in world history got another bump Monday, climbing $100 million to $1.4 billion.

The grand prize for Wednesday’s Powerball game is double the previous record for the largest jackpot for a U.S.-based game, and it’s worth a lump sum of $868 million before taxes and withholding, lottery officials said.

“Biggest jackpot in the history of the world. Absolutely confirmed,” Texas Lottery executive director Gary Grief said after no one matched the five numbers — 16, 19, 32, 34, 57 and the Powerball of 13 — for Saturday’s drawing.

The New York State Gaming Commission recently issued tips for people looking to participate in an office pool in advance of Wednesday’s drawing.

Tips include electing a group leader who can collect and account for the money and coming to a consensus beforehand on who will buy the ticket and where and when it will be purchased. The commission also suggests limiting the pool to 10 players or less, as the New York Lottery can only issue up to 10 checks in the case of a group winner.

The jackpot has continued to swell since Nov. 7, when it started out at $40 million. It surpassed $656 million — the previous mark for the largest grand prize of for a U.S. game — on Thursday, when it reached $675 million.

It’s been expanding ever since. Just before Saturday’s drawing it had reached $948.9 million. After that drawing, officials said Wednesday’s grand prize would be at $1.3 billion.

By the way, chances of winning the grand prize are one in 292,201,338.
