Highs in upper 70s expected for Memorial Day holiday

Memorial Day weather conditions across Long Island look mighty fine for outdoor activity, with partly sunny skies and daily high temperatures in the upper 70s, the National Weather Service said.

South winds from 7 to 16 mph could gust up to 26 mph, the service's Upton office said.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Samantha Augeri said temperatures on the North Shore could be slightly warmer.

"Just like the past two days, a breeze out of the south will keep our South Shore beaches and the East End feeling a little bit cooler," she said. "That's because the water temperature is about 55 to 60 degrees. Highs near the water will be around 70 degrees with Northwestern Long Island, especially Nassau County, near 80 degrees."

In its marine forecast, the weather service issued a small craft advisory, starting Monday afternoon and extending through Tuesday afternoon, for Moriches Inlet to Montauk Point; from Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet; and from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, to Fire Island Inlet, including 20 nautical miles out from each location.

For South Shore bays from Jones Inlet through Shinnecock Bay, the advisory runs from 2 p.m. Monday to late Monday night, the service said.

Clouds increase inland during nighttime hours Monday across Nassau and Suffolk counties, with overnight lows in the low 60s and winds shifting southwest at 13 to 18 mph.

Tuesday calls for another partly sunny day, with highs again in the mid 70s.
