Rain, but no snow, moves across Long Island
A chilly rain moved across Long Island Wednesday, lasting all day and overnight into Thursday.
The steady moisture -- rain and not snow -- was to "persist through rush hour and last most of the night," tapering off between 4 and 5 a.m. Thursday, said Tim Morrin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, based at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton. Total precipitation could approach three-quarters of an inch.
Some flight arrivals were delayed due to the weather -- an average of 15 minutes or less at Kennedy Airport and the same at LaGuardia Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration website.
Weather service forecasters said there was a 100 percent chance of rain in Nassau and Suffolk. But with temperatures "well above freezing," don't look for snow or sleet, said Morrin.
Temperatures were expected to return to the 40s on Thursday and possibly into the mid-to-upper 50s on Saturday, forecasters said.
There will be a chance of showers Saturday. But, it won't be snow.
