Sen. Martins leads Long Island delegation with 34 bills OKd: NYPIRG

Counting bills is a limited way to measure a state legislator's productivity, with the tally influenced by factors including whether his or her party is in the majority.

That said, a report by the New York Public Interest Research Group shows that Sen. Jack Martins (R-Mineola) led the Long Island delegation with 34 bills approved by both houses in 2014.

Martins ranked second in the Senate while Sen. Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City) was fifth with 24 and Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) was No. 10 with 21. In the Assembly, Fred Thiele (I-Sag Harbor) ranked sixth with 18 bills, Assemb. Robert Sweeney (D-Lindenhurst) was No. 8 with 14 and Assemb. Steve Engelbright (D-Setauket) was ninth with 13.

NYPIRG said Assemb. Michael Fitzpatrick (R-St. James) was among the most contrary legislators, casting the fifth-most number of no votes. Hesaid "nay" to 25 percent of the bills in Democrat-led Assembly.
