Service restored after LIRR derailment
The Long Island Rail Road restored full service to and from Brooklyn Wednesday night following a derailment, but LIRR officials said there could still be some lingering impact on commuters this morning.
Normal service to and from Atlantic Terminal was restored as of 6:19 p.m. -- less than three hours after a westbound train entering the terminal derailed.
The train, which was not carrying any passengers, was scheduled to turn around and become the 3:36 p.m. train to Far Rockaway. But, just after 3:30 p.m., one "truck" -- or set of four train wheels -- on the easternmost car of the eight-car train came off the tracks.
The derailed train had blocked four of the six tracks at Atlantic Terminal.
The LIRR is still investigating the cause. No crew members were hurt.
"At this point, we are anticipating that there may be some morning delays into Brooklyn," LIRR spokesman Sam Zambuto said.
More than 25,000 LIRR riders travel to and from Brooklyn each day. Repairs started about 8:15 p.m., LIRR spokeswoman Majorie Anders said last night: "The goal is to have it done by the morning."
