Service restored on Port Washington branch

Service between Great Neck and Port Washington was restored early Monday after a partially derailed non-passenger train was returned to the track in the Port Washington yard, the Long Island Rail Road said.

The LIRR, which is operating on a Sunday schedule because of the Memorial Day holiday, said the first westbound train operating from Port Washington after the issue was resolved was set to depart shortly after 7 a.m.

The derailment happened Sunday about 10 p.m., on an unoccupied train entering the yard, spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said.

There were no injuries.

The LIRR sent an email around 7 a.m. Monday, announcing that full service on the Port Washington branch had been restored.

The LIRR's five regular Sunday-only westbound trains will operate Monday, including the Cannonball West departing Montauk at 6:37 p.m.

On roads Monday, traffic was mostly moving well, according to the state Department of Transportation website, informny.com, which monitors major roadways across Nassau and Suffolk counties.
