Pockets of western Long Island could experience “isolated heavy downpours and some rumbles of thunder” this afternoon and evening, said a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.

More severe weather is expected in New Jersey, but Long Island could still face heavy rain between midafternoon and midnight, said Matt Scalora, meteorologist with the weather services.

Some Long Island communities, mostly in western Nassau County, could see up to a quarter of an inch of rain before midnight, Scalora said. Other areas could see only sprinkles, he said.

The National Weather Service has not issued any severe weather advisories for Long Island at this time.
