Small craft advisory in effect for much of Long Island

A small craft advisory is in effect for several portions of Long Island until 6 p.m. Monday.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory for the Long Island Sound, Peconic and Gardiners bays and for South Shore bays from Jones Inlet through Shinnecock Bay.

High winds from the east and southeast also have prompted the service to issue a gale warning until 2 p.m. for other coastal areas, including from Moriches Inlet to Montauk Point; Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet; and Sandy Hook, N.J., to Fire Island Inlet.

The warning extends 20 nautical miles out from Montauk Point, Moriches Inlet and Fire Island Inlet and also includes all of New York Harbor.

Winds of between 15 and 25 knots are expected, the service said.

Weather conditions Monday across Nassau and Suffolk counties are expected to be rainy with temperatures in the mid to high 50s, the service said.
