The National Weather Service issued a special marine warning Tuesday for rain, winds and potential waterspouts off the South Shore of Long Island.

The warning was for waters from the Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet, Sandy Hook, New Jersey, to the Fire Island Inlet and the South Shore bays from Jones Inlet through Shinnecock Bay.

"Mariners can expect gusty winds, high waves and heavy rain. Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until these showers pass," the weather service in a statement shortly before 7:30 a.m.

"These heavy showers may also produce sudden waterspouts. Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous seas," the statement said.

There was also a high risk of rip currents through Tuesday evening for ocean beaches off Long Island and New York City, the weather service said.

Winds will decrease on the harbor, Long Island Sound and bays first, then abate on the ocean, the weather service.

A weak frontal system approaching the area could result in small craft warnings later in the week, the weather service said.
