A small craft advisory is in effect for South Shore waters, the National Weather Service said Wednesday in its marine report.

The advisory is effective from 8 a.m. Wednesday to Thursday afternoon, covering Moriches Inlet to Montauk Point and Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet.

It runs slightly later for waters from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, to Fire Island Inlet, the service's Upton office said.

South winds are expected to shift north later Wednesday and increase to 15 to 20 knots with some gusts to 25 knots.

Wave heights of 4 to 6 feet are expected, with the chance of rain during the day and into the evening hours on Wednesday ranging from 40 to 60 percent.
