Snow 'likely' this weekend for Long Island, but intensity up in air

Long Islanders should enjoy the sunny skies and temps in the mid-30s Friday, because this weekend could bring significant snowfall.

Sunday marks the anniversary of a ferocious late-fall storm that dumped a record 26-plus inches of snow on Long Island, and one year later, forecasters at the National Weather Service are saying the area could get battered again by snow Sunday and Monday.

But there's also a chance we will get nothing.

The latest forecast Friday morning says snow is "likely" for Sunday, mainly after noon. It's possible the snow will slide into Monday as well.

As for how much snow, it all depends on a low-pressure system off the Southeast coast and how close it passes to the Island as it moves northeast.

"It's hard to tell. It's all up in the air," said David Stark of the National Weather Service in Upton.

"If it tracks to the east, nothing's going to happen," Stark said. But if the storm tracks to the west, "the likelihood of seeing heavier amounts of snow goes up.

"There's no rhyme or reason right now," Stark said.
