Snow means fun for some on LI

The winter's first significant snowfall has come with a silver lining: a sizable opportunity for winter recreation on Long Island.

Visitors to some of Long Island's state parks will be able to take advantage of sledding and cross-country skiing, according to George Gorman Jr., deputy regional director for the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Reservation. He said all of the Long Island parks were shut Sunday afternoon, but are expected to reopen Monday after the storm subsides and roads and pathways are cleared.

Cross-country skiing will be available at Bethpage, Caleb Smith, Caumsett, Connetquot River and other parks, he said. Depending on the amount of snow cover, sledding will be available at a number of parks.

"In some cases the wind blows the snow off the hills," Gorman said.

Conditions on the East End may be less ideal for sledding and skiing, as rain was forecast along with snow.
