Some incumbent fire commissioners ousted

Supporters of paring the Gordon Heights Fire District's budget -- which levies on residents the highest fire taxes on Long Island -- scored a major coup Tuesday with the election of challenger Joyce Bourne.

Her victory means the five-member board is now controlled by a group that wants to rein in costs in the district.

Unofficially, Bourne got 268 votes, challenger James Freeman 169 and incumbent James Kelly 55, according to Bourne. District officials did not provide vote totals Tuesday.

"It doesn't make sense that we have to pay these high taxes," said Bourne, who lost by a single vote when she ran last year.

Among other fire district elections across Long Island, South Farmingdale commissioner Richard Bylicki was ousted by opponent John Boklak.

"It was an amazing turnout by the taxpayers," board chairman Thomas Mastakouris said. "They spoke loud and clear."

Bylicki, 53, is fighting fire board allegations that he wrongly received Length of Service Awards Program disability benefits while also serving as the program's administrator.

Boklak, 42, an attorney and a two-year South Farmingdale firefighter, said he "got a lot of support from the department members here."

Wading River voters rejected a $4.75 million bond referendum to rebuild a substation. Huntington voters approved a $4.5 million bond for construction and repairs.
