SPCA: Hurt, starving dog brought to Bohemia animal hospital may have been neglected

The Suffolk County SPCA said Tuesday it is trying to determine whether injuries to a pit-bull mix named Cappuccino are a case of neglect.

Chief Roy Gross of the animal protection group said the dog was brought to a Bohemia animal hospital last week with deep wounds and suffering from dehydration and malnutrition.

When veterinarians told the owner the dog needed treatment, the owner said she could not pay for it, Gross said, and took the dog home.

After receiving a call from the animal hospital, Gross said his office intervened, and the dog was taken back to the hospital on Saturday where it is being treated for free.

“Whether it’s criminal, we’re trying to make a determination on that,” Gross said. “Right now, it’s just a question of getting the dog in good shape again.”
