Spring on LI wraps up as drier and warmer than average

Drier than average, warmer than average.
That about sums up the 2016 meteorological spring, which runs from March through May.
The period on Long Island registered 2.3 degrees above normal, giving it fourth warmest honors, said Jessica Spaccio, climatologist with the Northeast Regional Climate Center, based at Cornell University. That’s at Long Island MacArthur Airport, where the National Weather Service has maintained data since 1984.
May, too, was slightly warmer than usual.
The month “started cold but ended very warm and was .3 degrees above normal,” said News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman. That was also at the airport, where precipitation came in at 0.17 of an inch below average. Long Island is in the “abnormally dry” category, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
Looking ahead to the early days of June, today and tomorrow are expected to see temperatures in the low to mid-70s for Nassau, closer to 70 for eastern Suffolk, thanks to an easterly onshore flow, and back up to around 80 for Saturday, said Jay Engle, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton. Tomorrow night brings a slight chance of thunderstorms, clearing for Saturday, back in rain mode for Saturday night and especially Sunday, he said.
The area has a slight chance of seeing a cooler than normal stretch from around June 7 to 15, according to the Climate Prediction Center, which made no calls on precipitation.
The monthly average temperature for June is 68.4 degrees, with 4.27 inches the norm for precipitation.
