State Police cracking down on holiday drunken, impaired drivers

State Police on Long Island will participate this holiday season in a national campaign against drunken, impaired and distracted driving.

Troopers will be operating DWI checkpoints and taking other enforcement steps during the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” campaign, which runs from Friday through Jan. 1.

“Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints, along with more troopers on the roadways during the campaign,” State Police said in a news release.

Troopers will also be looking for distracted drivers, drivers without seat belts, and drivers who fail to move over or exercise caution when passing emergency vehicles stopped in the road or on the shoulder, police said.

The troopers will also use unmarked cars, which helps them identify motorists who illegally use cellphones or handheld devices while driving, police said.
