LIRR service restored after suspicious package investigation in Merrick

LIRR service has been restored after an investigation into a suspicious package that had been spotted near train tracks in Merrick.

Trains had been held as Nassau and MTA police investigated, authorities said. Service was restored about 3:45 p.m., the Long Island Rail Road said.

The package was seen west of the Merrick train station about 3:25 p.m., said MTA spokeswoman Meredith Daniels. Nassau police said they were investigating.

LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan said MTA Police "took the necessary precautions" with the suspicious package and quickly "deemed it not to be threatening."

The incident came as the evening rush hour begins.

The LIRR had suspended service on the Babylon and Montauk branches due to the police activity at Merrick.
