Emergency responders used the Jaws of Life Monday morning to free the driver of an SUV that overturned in South Hempstead at Maude Street and Grand Avenue, a fire official said.

It appeared that after hitting a tree, the SUV rolled over and clipped another vehicle, said South Hempstead Fire Department chief John Kelly.

The fire department, with assistance from Nassau County Emergency Services, used the Jaws of Life to cut off the vehicle’s roof to get the driver out, he said. The man appeared to be all right, he said, but was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

The driver, the only person in the SUV, was heading north on Grand Avenue toward the Southern State Parkway, when the accident occurred, he said.

Nassau County Police said the call for an overturned vehicle came in at 8:28 a.m.
