A swimmer who disappeared while swimming at Cupsogue Beach in East Moriches Sunday was still reported missing, authorities said Monday.
Xiangyong Chen, 31, of New York City, and Deng Zheng, 26, of Brooklyn, went swimming with two other men in waters with riptide currents that were considered to be "life-threatening" that day by the National Weather Service, due to rip currents on Atlantic beaches.
Two of the swimmers who were closer to shore made it back to the beach safely, but Chen and Zheng were missing. Two Suffolk Park lifeguards on a training workout run were alerted and were able to find and bring Zheng to shore. CPR was performed, and Zheng was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, authorities said, but he was pronounced dead at that hospital.
U.S. Coast Guard and other emergency rescue units searched for Chen, but as of Monday evening, he had not been found.
