A house fire in Terryville on Sunday evening left a woman dead and her husband critically injured, Suffolk police said.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, Suffolk Sixth Precinct police officers andTerryville Fire Department firefighters, with the assistance of eight other fire departments, responded to a 911 call regarding a fire at 58 Superior St.

Police said John Davis, 76, escaped the fire and was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was in critical condition, but his wife, Catherine Davis, 83, died in the fire.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating. Police said a preliminary investigation determined that the cause of the fire was noncriminal in nature.
