Glen Cove 2000

They arrived in <a href="/topics/Glen_Cove%2C_NY">Glen Cove</a>'s four elementary schools on Sept. 8, 1987, kindergartners dealing with cubbies, snack time and making new friends. 
Their education began at a time of economic downturn - just weeks before the October stock market crash - but high school graduation occurred amid great prosperity. 
One year later they witnessed the worst terror attack on the United States. Now they find themselves in another economic downturn, with the <a href="/topics/Unemployment">unemployment</a> rate for young people hovering around 15 percent. 
They were the Class of 2000 - more than 200 students in <a href="/topics/Glen_Cove%2C_NY">Glen Cove</a> whose academic lives were chronicled by Newsday for 13 years, from kindergarten to high school graduation. 
When they assemble in <a href="/topics/Glen_Cove%2C_NY">Glen Cove</a> next weekend for their 10th reunion and talk about their lives then and now, they will do so as a group that came of age post-9/11, lived through a dizzying technological boom and witnessed the election of Barack <a href="/topics/Barack_Obama">Obama</a>.

Upbeat and optimistic 
Shaped by the tumult of their time, they remain enthusiastic about what is to come, according to the snapshot that emerged as Newsday tracked down members of the class, now in their late 20s, and interviewed or surveyed them about their lives. 
Their comments echo findings from a national poll of the so-called millennial generation - those born after 1980, the first generation to come of age in the new millennium - which found they are more upbeat than their elders about their own economic futures as well as about the overall state of the nation. 
"They register optimism at higher levels," said Paul <a href="/topics/Paul_Taylor">Taylor</a>, director of the <a href="/topics/Pew_Research_Center">Pew Research Center</a> Social &amp; Demographic Trends Project, which conducted the survey. "It stands out - no question." 
In exploring the generation's behaviors, values and opinions, researchers found those who are making "the passage into adulthood at the start of a new millennium have begun to forge theirs: confident, self-expressive, liberal, upbeat and open to change" - even as their entry into careers and first jobs has been badly set back by the Great <a href="/topics/Economic_Recession">Recession</a>. 
Indeed, the vast majority interviewed say they are satisfied with their lives and optimistic about the future. 
"Every day I wonder, How did I get here? And every day I am reminded of how lucky I am," said Amber Abrams, one of those grads.

Their post-9/11 world 
Abrams, who lives in <a href="/topics/Cape_Town">Cape Town</a>, South Africa, was studying ethnic studies and critical race theory at <a href="/topics/Columbia_University">Columbia University</a> on Sept. 11, 2001. 
"On a variety of levels, Sept. 11 altered my existence," said Abrams. "All in one day I lost and regained hope in humanity, and all in one day my identity, my ideas of who and where I would go were undone." 
After the Twin Towers fell, Abrams worked for three days organizing and packing supplies and helped create a central office for the <a href="/topics/Federal_Emergency_Management_Agency">Federal Emergency Management Agency</a>. 
"That organizational experience in a moment of crisis, with others just pitching in and lending a hand, that experience gave my jaded early-20s self hope for people again." 
The terrorist attacks so close to home had a different effect on Carlos Espinoza, who had entered the military after graduation. Honorably discharged from the <a href="/topics/US_Marine_Corps">Marine Corps</a> two days before Sept. 11 after suffering a shoulder injury in training, he became more cautious. 
"It's really hard to know who you can trust. Someone can smile at you, that same person can stab you in the back," he said. 
Paul Miller, 28, who now lives in <a href="/topics/Levittown%2C_NY">Levittown</a>, commutes to <a href="/topics/Manhattan">Manhattan</a> with his wife. They have established a meeting place in case of emergency. 
"Working in the city after 9/11, you look at everybody with a different eye, and you have to be more aware of surroundings," he said. "It is always in the back of your mind when you enter that tunnel at Penn Station." 
For Carol Jin, the defining moment was the <a href="/topics/Indian_Ocean">Indian Ocean</a> earthquake and tsunami in December 2004, which struck coastal regions of <a href="/topics/Thailand">Thailand</a> she had visited earlier that year. The event is "seared in my memory," she said, and she still finds the scale of destruction "unfathomable." But the aftermath brought hope. 
"Watching different nations rally together to provide humanitarian aid showed me that despite its imperfections, the world is composed of compassionate people," Jin said.

Witnesses to history 
Like many of her classmates, Jin has welcomed life's unanticipated turns. "I've learned to embrace the idea that things in life don't always turn out the way I expect them to, but often it is for the better." 
Levonne Pittman, another Glen Cove 2000 grad, said she never thought she would see the election of the first African-American president, especially before she turned 30. 
"Who thought in a million years this would ever happen? And it is going on in my generation," said Pittman. "That to me is like a privilege when things like that happen." 
Shanise O'Neill, a Glen Cove grad who is now an assistant district attorney in <a href="/topics/Queens%2C_NY">Queens</a>, said she closely watched the presidential race, including the Democratic primary contest between <a href="/topics/Barack_Obama">Obama</a> and <a href="/topics/Hillary_Rodham_Clinton">Hillary Rodham Clinton</a>, knowing history would be made if either were elected. 
"It was nice to see that we were taking such a turn for such a change. I didn't think I would see that while being a young woman," she said. 
Balancing that joy is the gritty reality of living in a struggling economy. 
Pittman, for example, is a certified medical biller but works in an after-school program in Glen Cove. She received her certificate in 2003. 
"I am still looking for a job in medical billing. I am looking all the time," said Pittman, who still lives in Glen Cove. "It's very difficult. They want people with experience." 
Daisy Alvarado, who is married with two children, lost her job, and her husband, Jeff, did, too, in 2006 when both were employed in the housing loan industry at Ameriquest. "We saw that things were changing," said Alvarado, whose maiden name was Sanchez. "We never expected something that bad to happen." 
She and Jeff bought a house in <a href="/topics/Hicksville%2C_NY">Hicksville</a> in 2005, and managed to hang on to it: Jeff landed a job in direct sales for <a href="/topics/Cablevision">Cablevision</a>, which owns Newsday. 
The Class of 2000 also witnessed the arrival of the <a href="/topics/iPod">iPod</a>, <a href="/topics/Facebook_Inc.">Facebook</a> and Twitter. 
"I believe we've reached a really interesting, thrilling but scary time with big changes in the last 10 years or so," said Scott Goldberg, who lives in Glen Cove and makes independent films. Technology is part of his career, but he is wary of its power. "We see more people becoming more needy, seeking attention on social network sites, and we are relying more and more on the Internet and technology than remembering what it's like to live a normal life without it."

Living on <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a>? 
Whether a normal life includes living on <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> is hotly debated by the Class of 2000 - with nearly half of those who replied to an informal survey saying they have moved away. Local demographic experts have worried about this trend for years. 
But on this topic, too, their optimism comes through: Though nearly two-thirds of the 44 respondents agree Long Island is too expensive for people their age, even more agree it's a good place to live and start a family. 
"Although people may complain that Long Island is expensive, which it is, I still believe it is better than other parts of the country," said Donato Cipriano, 27, a human resources administrator who remained in Glen Cove. 
Michael Arnone - a third-grade teacher in the same classroom he attended as a third-grade student - said he would like to purchase his own home and raise a family. But like many classmates, he said the high cost of living on Long Island makes that difficult. The median price of a home in Glen Cove was $399,500 in 2009, compared with $237,000 in 1999. 
For now, Arnone lives with his parents. "I still live at home, and I am not sure what I am going to be doing," he said. 
About one in four said they live with their parents. 
Miller stayed local because his family lives here. 
"It is tough to live on Long Island," said Miller, who owns a home in <a href="/topics/Levittown%2C_NY">Levittown</a> and works in television production. "Anywhere else, I could afford a house twice the size of what I have now for less money."

Reaching out 
A few said they had lost their jobs recently. Others have started their own businesses. 
Espinoza, the <a href="/topics/US_Marine_Corps">Marine Corps</a> veteran, launched a nonprofit organization, Semper4Soldiers, to help servicemen and women returning home. "I see how many of the guys come back and they don't know what to do or where to go for help. That happened to me," said Espinoza, who resides in <a href="/topics/Huntington%2C_NY">Huntington</a>. 
He holds food drives at area supermarkets and collects donations through a website. His organization also works with several veterans agencies. 
"Last week I got a phone call, a woman said her son is coming back from <a href="/topics/Afghanistan">Afghanistan</a> and she couldn't afford to buy food. I said, 'Don't worry I am going to help you.' That's how I help." 
Taylor, of Pew, said this age group will face multiple challenges in the years ahead: a staggering national debt, older people putting off retirement, meaning fewer chances in the job market, and other lingering effects from the stalled economy that could impact wages for years. 
"The deck seems stacked against them," Taylor said. "But on the temperamental side, they seem to have a lot in their favor."

A busy 10 years for the Class of 2000

These 15 kindergartners from Glen Cove were the first group of students Newsday interviewed in 1987 and were part of the class tracked through the year 2000. Where are they now? We were able to track down nine of them. Here's what they're doing and what they have to say about their lives now. 
Caterina Ienopoli, 28, Glen Cove, teacher, engaged to be married. "I'm truly blessed. I'm a second-grade teacher in an amazing public school and I'm going to marry the love of my life, Rich." 
Nicole Martino, 27, Washington, D.C., single. Martino is a licensed social worker.

Giovanni Autran, 27, <a href="/topics/Brooklyn_Bridge%2C_NY">Brooklyn</a>, founder/director of Nomadic Films production company, single. "I loved growing up in Glen Cove ... it was very diverse — economically, culturally and a nice little mix of urban, suburban and rural in one little place." 
John Dempster, 28, <a href="/topics/Atlanta">Atlanta</a>, works in home improvement, engaged, three children. "Our kindergarten teacher said to Gio Autran that his head was in the clouds. Look at him now." 
Jason Moskowitz, 28, <a href="/topics/Huntington%2C_NY">Huntington</a>, rowing coach, Friends Academy, moving to Sarasota, Fla. in the fall to coach a rowing club, single. "One of my oldest friends, who was my neighbor in Glen Cove, we had lost touch during middle school and high school but ended up going to same college and became best friends." *Transferred to Friends in fifth grade, but recently re-connected with Glen Cove classmates on <a href="/topics/Facebook_Inc.">Facebook</a>. 
Lea DiCaterino Armstrong, 27, <a href="/topics/Boston">Boston</a>, public relations, married. "I never realized that I'd also end up happily married to the boy who used to sit next to me in my high school government class. After living in <a href="/topics/California">California</a> for the past 8 years, everyone thought I'd end up there for the long haul. However, I never realized how much I'd miss the East Coast and how happy I'd be when we came back." 
Carolyn Kroeger Hawit, 27, Fairfax, Va. "In high school, I thought that I'd be living on a beach in <a href="/topics/California">California</a> by now, so that's obviously different ... Other than being on the opposite side of the country, I'm almost exactly where I imagined I'd be at this point in my life." 
Ajah Real, 27, moved to <a href="/topics/Atlanta">Atlanta</a> when she was 13, now lives in Stockbridge, Ga. "I loved Glen Cove and I miss all my friends."

Catching up with 1987 Glen Cove kindergartners

Daisy Alvarado pulled her high school yearbook from a bookcase near the couch in her Hicksville home and showed it to her two little children. 
"See, that's Mommy," she said sweetly, as Jaylene, 1, and Jayden, 2, scrambled over her lap to get a better look on a recent June afternoon. 
It has been 10 years since Alvarado, 28, graduated with the rest of the Class of 2000 from Glen Cove High School. Back then she was Daisy Sanchez. In that time, she married, had two children, bought the Hicksville home with her husband, Jeff, and lost a job. Now she's trying to launch a cake design business. 
After graduation, Alvarado worked for Ameriquest Mortgage as a loan processor just as the real estate boom was starting to really take off. Her soon-to-be husband also got a job there. They were living in her mother's home, but decided to buy a house in 2005 with their earnings. 
"So we were really fortunate, we did very well, and I kept getting promoted. I got a senior processing job and he was one of the top producers," she said. "We bought the house, we bought cars, we went to <a href="/topics/Aruba">Aruba</a>." 
Ameriquest, which made loans to buyers with poor credit, was found to have engaged in deceptive and predatory practices and ended up laying off nearly 4,000 people across the country. The Alvarados found themselves out of work. 
"We got into a huge bind from there, you know, we kept trying to go into the same field," she said. 
Eventually, her husband found a job in direct sales at <a href="/topics/Cablevision">Cablevision</a>, which owns Newsday, and Alvarado started working in a bakery. But she found juggling working and child care too difficult. 
Now, she makes and sells cakes at home, often specializing in ones for children's parties. She also makes several specialties, such as tres leches cake and a Spanish caramel cake.

As a student at Landing Elementary School in <a href="/topics/Glen_Cove%2C_NY">Glen Cove</a>, Shanise O'Neill dressed in a small suit and tie on <a href="/topics/Halloween">Halloween</a>. Instead of being a witch or ghost, she went trick-or-treating as a lawyer. 
Inspired by a television show, she said she knew in third or fourth grade that was what she wanted to be. Now, O'Neill is coming up on her third year as an assistant district attorney in <a href="/topics/Queens%2C_NY">Queens</a> Criminal Court, where she prosecutes misdemeanors. 
"I like to argue and I like to talk," she said, standing in her suit and high heels outside the <a href="/topics/Queens%2C_NY">Queens</a> courthouse on a recent morning. "This is the perfect job for me." 
O'Neill, 27, is one of many family members who attended <a href="/topics/Glen_Cove%2C_NY">Glen Cove</a> public schools. She still lives in the small city. In her Class of 2000 yearbook, O'Neill said she was going to be a lawyer, going to have a son and going to be married. 
She is engaged to be married in April. A friend from kindergarten is in her wedding party. And she has a son, <a href="/topics/Cartier">Cartier</a> Funderburke, 10, who attends Landing. 
"I love that I get to go back," she said. 
She took electives in high school that she said helped prepare her for her legal career, including criminal justice, trial and debate, and public speaking. 
Her mother helped raise her son while O'Neill was in her last year in high school and again when she went to St. John's University. She has known her fiance, <a href="/topics/Cartier">Cartier</a>'s father, Charles Funderburke of <a href="/topics/Westbury%2C_NY">Westbury</a>, since the ninth grade. 
"Even after having my son in high school, it was not going to deter me from what I was going to do," O'Neill said. "I didn't take any time off between high school and college. It feels good to know I accomplished exactly what I wanted to do."

Followed her dream from grade school to law school

Amber Abrams left the United States four years after graduating from Glen Cove High School and found a new beginning in her native South Africa. 
She is managing a <a href="/topics/World_Health_Organization">World Health Organization</a>-supported project in <a href="/topics/Cape_Town">Cape Town</a> called the Pan African Clinical Trials Registry. 
She earned a master's degree after moving to South Africa and had contemplated returning to <a href="/topics/New_York%2C_NY">New York</a> after a visit in November 2008, but the economy frightened her off. 
"I was in the country for six weeks, watching friends and loved ones lose their jobs. . . . I decided returning to South Africa would be better than trying to find a job in the ruined economy," Abrams said in an e-mail from South Africa. 
Her parents remain in Glen Cove. 
On Sept. 11, 2001, Abrams was a <a href="/topics/Columbia_University">Columbia University</a> student and working at the <a href="/topics/New_York%2C_NY">New York</a> City Human Rights Commission next to the Twin Towers. 
She was on the subway headed to work when her father called about the attack. Wanting to help, she later tried to give blood but was denied, and speculated it might have had "something to do with being African." 
It might have been inoculations she had received overseas or just that she was originally from Africa, she said. But her anger turned into goodwill. 
"I was furious, and stormed downtown with some of my softball teammates . . . to <a href="/topics/Chelsea_Piers">Chelsea Piers</a> where the emergency teams had set up boats to ferry people down to <a href="/topics/1_World_Trade_Center">Ground Zero</a>." 
She volunteered with the relief effort for three days. She said she didn't plan the path she has taken, but "without realizing it, I lived the concept of letting life bring what it holds without resistance (or too much resistance)," she said in the e-mail. 
Abrams lives near the sea and can see Muizenberg and Kalk Bay mountains from her window. Sometimes she sees whales, sometimes fish eagles at the wetlands down the road. "Every day I thank the forces of nature that have brought me to this naturally exquisite place," she said.

From Glen Cove to South Africa

On July 4, independent filmmaker Scott Goldberg released "Mr. Mullen" online, a product of more than a year of work and shot almost entirely in Goldberg's hometown of Glen Cove. 
Goldberg produced, wrote and directed the 10-minute film about a man who seeks revenge after losing everything because of the economic crash and corruption in big business and the <a href="/topics/Federal_Reserve">Federal Reserve</a>. The trailer is at mrmullenfilm.com. 
Goldberg, who got a bachelor of fine arts degree in film/ video from <a href="/topics/Five_Towns_College">Five Towns College</a>, rejected the notion that a filmmaker must go to <a href="/topics/Hollywood">Hollywood</a> or even <a href="/topics/Manhattan">Manhattan</a> to make movies. He decided to become an independent filmmaker in his own backyard and said he believes it's possible to create a local film culture. 
"The illusion that I had was that was how it had to be - you had to go to <a href="/topics/Hollywood">Hollywood</a>, you had to work your way up," said Goldberg, 28. "But as an independent filmmaker, you do your own thing, you're not fetching coffee for 10 years." 
Goldberg grew up in Glen Cove and attended its public schools from kindergarten, graduating in the Class of 2000. In high school, he took video production. But independent filmmaking requires sacrifice. Goldberg still lives at home and works freelance jobs, such as shooting bar mitzvahs and weddings, to make money to pay actors and buy equipment. "Mullen" is his fifth short film. 
He said Glen Cove - with its diverse community and backdrop as a small city on the North Shore with apartments and Gold Coast mansions - is an excellent place to make movies. 
"I believe in building a revolution from here," he said, "where we can make the art we want and do it for a living."

Making films from home is his personal revolution

For third-grade teacher Michael Arnone, Room 106 at Connolly Elementary School in Glen Cove is quite familiar. 
Arnone, 28, was a third-grade student himself in the same room where a wall of windows still looks out over green grass. He brought his old books from home for his current class - the words "Michael Arnone Room 106" inscribed inside. 
"This class is actually pretty special and interesting," said Arnone, walking from desk to desk, helping students with a writing assignment. In his third year teaching in Glen Cove, he just received tenure. 
"I always found that it made me happy being around kids and teaching and it was the one job I enjoyed when I woke up in the morning," Arnone said. "I love my kids. I am really nothing without them." 
Arnone was a kindergartner at Connolly, one of the Class of 2000, when he was described in a 1987 story as the first in his class to memorize a poem about five little soldiers. 
After attending Marist College, he got a master's degree in elementary education at the <a href="/topics/C._W._Post">C.W. Post</a> Campus of <a href="/topics/Long_Island_University">Long Island University</a>. 
Glen Cove schools, in particular their diversity, he said, "taught me right from wrong and how to be respectful and exposed me to a lot of other things so when I went away to college, I was more prepared." 
When he was hired in Glen Cove, he didn't ask to be assigned to Connolly, he just ended up there. The same with Room 106 - a teacher retired, leaving the room open. 
"He is the all-around teacher," said Principal Rosemarie Sekelsky. "He cares about social and academic growth. You see the class and say he has one of the best classes, but he has one of the best because he takes the time." 
Arnone said he was quiet and reserved in school and keeps in touch with only a handful of friends from then. But now tenured, he said he plans to spend his career in the Glen Cove district.
