Three appointed to LI park commission
Three Long Islanders were tapped for the Island's Regional Park Commission, which advises the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the governor's office said Friday.
Appointed were: Ruth Douzinas, a project manager with global construction firm CH2M Hill Inc.; Richard Remmer, president of Snapper Inn in Oakdale; and Kevin Gershowitz, president of Medford-based Gershow Recycling.
They will fill three vacant seats to return the commission to its full strength with nine members.
The state Senate confirmed the nominations, put forward by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in the waning days of the legislative session.
The new commissioners have environmental and recreational backgrounds.
Douzinas, whose term expires June 1, 2019, helps oversee projects for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. She holds a master's degree in environmental engineering and science from Stanford University.
Remmer, whose term expires June 1, 2015, runs two other Oakdale enterprises: Vanderbilt's Wharf Marina and Nicoll's Point Marina. The lawyer's background also includes experience in developing natural resources and residential real estate.
Gershowitz, whose term expires June 1, 2018, runs one of Long Island's oldest environmental companies, which recycles scrap metal.
The company, which employs 750 people, helps support communities with various endeavors, including a yearly scholarship program for high school students that prompted Patchogue-Medford Youth Services to name him "Man of the Year."
