Mixed results in town, city races
Voters on Long Island went to the polls Wednesday to elect council members and judges in town and city races.
In Glen Cove, party control of the City Council will tilt to the GOP. Republican Joseph Capobianco defeated Democrat Theresa Moschetta in a special election.
Democratic City Councilman Nicholas DiLeo died in April, leaving the council -- long a Democratic stronghold -- with three Republicans and two Democrats.
In North Hempstead, incumbent Democrat Peter Zuckerman defeated Republican Bonnie Parente, an attorney and the deputy mayor of East Williston, for the Second District town board seat.
Zuckerman, an attorney and former East Hills trustee, was appointed to the town board in January after the resignation two months earlier of board member Thomas Dwyer.
Zuckerman said shortly before midnight that he was "very excited to be able to continue to serve as councilman . . . it's certainly a good night."
In Brookhaven, Republican Neil Foley bested Democrat Amy C. Keyes in the race for the Fifth District town board seat vacated in August by Tim Mazzei, a candidate for Suffolk County Court. Foley works as a salesman for Sunovion Pharmaceuticals and serves on Brookhaven's Board of Zoning Appeals. Keyes works as an executive assistant to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.
In the race to become judge of the City of Long Beach, Corey E. Klein, the city attorney, was running on the Democratic line and beat Republican Theodore E. Hommel, a deputy county attorney for Nassau.
He'll succeed Judge Roy Tepper, elected last year to a 10-year term after defeating Hommel. He was required to step down at the end of this year because he turned 70. The winner was elected to a 10-year term, which pays $118,300 per year.
In the race for Southold Town trustee, Republican incumbent David R. Bergen beat Democrat Abigail C. Field.
Democrat Annmarie Seddio was re-elected in an uncontested race for Shelter Island receiver of taxes.
Mary-Faith Westervelt, who is unaffiliated, won an unopposed race for re-election as Shelter Island town justice.
