BJ's gas station under construction at Commack Shopping Center

Construction is underway on a new BJ's gas station at Commack Shopping Center, officials have confirmed.

The project calls for a new gas station with eight pump islands, a canopy and a 160-square-foot kiosk building.

The developer, Commack Shopping Center Associates LLC, of Manhattan, also is building a standalone Wells Fargo Bank, which will span about 3,600 square feet, at the shopping center, according to town planning department officials.

The gas station will open behind Michaels, the arts and crafts retailer, and a small propane exchange also will be included on the site.

BJ's Wholesale Club has gas stations in Bellport, Farmingdale, Westbury, Valley Stream, Freeport and Riverhead. It operates a propane tank station in Islandia, according to the company's website. BJ's gas is discounted to club members.

The BJ's in Commack opened at the shopping center at 2 Veterans Memorial Hwy. in 2022, replacing a former Macy's department store, Newsday has reported.

Recently, Costco opened a gas station in Commack by its Garet Place warehouse. Costco also operates gas stations in Holbrook and Riverhead, according to the retailer's website.

The Smithtown Town Board, whose members serve on the board of site plan review, approved plans to build the gas station and the bank during a meeting in July.

A new one-story, 3,579-square-foot Wells Fargo Bank site will be built on the northeast corner of the property. The bank also will feature a drive-thru, according to town planning department officials.

The new Wells Fargo branch in the Commack Shopping Center will open next year, company officials have said. The bank opened a new branch in October in Lake Grove.

The new Suffolk County banks are part of Wells Fargo’s larger strategy to expand in New York, “creating a more neighborhood-focused branch network and modernizing the bank’s retail footprint,” the company said in a statement last month when the Lake Grove site opened.

Joseph Rupolo, a Wells Fargo spokesman, said in a statement Wednesday the new Commack branch “is another step in creating a more modern, open, and community-centric branch network for our customers.”

“Wells Fargo remains firmly committed to Commack, and we look forward to continuing to serve the community,” Rupolo said.

BJ's representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Commack Shopping Center Associates LLC also did not immediately return requests for comment.
