This week in Huntington newsletter: Smyth paints a dire picture if the 2027 budget doesn't pierce the cap

Good morning, Huntington. I’m ready for the weekend — how about you?

Our town continues to be abuzz over next year's budget, with Town Supervisor Ed Smyth pushing to pierce the tax cap.

When I spoke to him this week, he said it would equal “fiscal suicide” if the cap isn’t busted and would result in severe cuts across all departments in Town Hall.

Then, at a workshop Wednesday on a draft budget that wouldn't pierce the cap, Smyth said some of the things on the chopping block would include the Fall Festival, St. Patrick's Day parade and free concerts. 

Those cuts would be in addition to eliminating unfilled budgeted positions, reducing material expenses such as lumber, asphalt and fuel, and then looking to raise fees.

Smyth needs to present a preliminary budget by Sept. 30. The next budget workshop will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Town Hall, 100 Main St.
