This week in Huntington newsletter: LIRR weekend disruptions, and celebrating and Islanders hero

Happy Friday, everyone. If your weekend plans include traveling on the Long Island Rail Road, you may want to reconsider. 

Crippling weekend service disruptions return on the LIRR’s Huntington, Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson, Hempstead and Oyster Bay lines starting tonight as the railroad upgrades switches and signals near Elmont. And the interruptions aren't just for this weekend: They will happen most weekends for the remainder of the summer.

Hard to believe that August arrives tomorrow — but there's plenty of summer left.

Among the rites of the season are golf outings. And one to remember is named for late Islanders legend Clark Gillies. It benefited his foundation and was held at two separate courses in our town Monday. 

In this week’s newsletter, we also spotlight a story that includes former town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci, and a heartwarming tale about a recently married couple who grew up in Huntington communities that are right next to each other.

• Gillies was a hockey Hall of Famer and an Islander from 1974 to 1986. He died in 2022, but his memory lives on through his foundation, which helps families facing steep challenges. The foundation's annual golf outing was held Monday at two of our town's courses, wrote Ben Dickson. A $200,000 donation was announced for the North Shore Holiday House.
