This week in Huntington newsletter: More fallout from last fall's elections as a key player says has was 'duped'

How is it already Memorial Day weekend? It's hard to believe it has been more than six months since last fall's town elections, and yet the fallout continues.
Check out my latest story on last November's race for town supervisor involving Maria Delgado. She's the Huntington Station woman who appeared on the ballot on the Working Families Party line and who got a surprising number of votes, which may have had an impact on the outcome. I interviewed the man who collected signatures on a petition to get Delgado on the ballot. Huntington Manor Fire District Commissioner Michael Pastore says he thought he was asked by a “trusted member” of the town's Democratic committee to help Delgado. He said he feels like he was "duped" and misled.
It was an interesting revelation in a story that continues to unfold. As I reported, the state attorney general's office is investigating the race.

Trail makeover at Caumsett

Here’s some good news if you love the outdoors but aren't looking to stray far from home: Fresh Pond Trail, a popular walking site in Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve in Lloyd Harbor, is expected to be renovated starting this summer after the project was awarded a $100,000 state grant, as I reported.
The historic trail, on a steep hillside, serves as an access point from the Main House down to 14-acre Fresh Pond near Long Island Sound. It's been closed since August 2022.
The renovation is expected to be complete by year’s end. In the meantime, there are plenty of other trails to navigate within Caumsett's more than 1,500 acres.

Elsewhere in town

- Ed Veneziano, of East Northport, was among family members who paid tribute to Sgt. Nicholas Governale, who was killed in a scouting mission off Guadalcanal in 1943 at age 22 — and whose remains were recovered just a few years ago. The family celebrated a funeral Mass last week for their fallen hero. Read my colleague Nicholas Spangler's moving story, and watch the report by NewsdayTV's Virginia Huie.
- Voters in the Huntington school district overwhelmingly approved the district's budget Tuesday. It calls for a 2.76% tax levy increase. Most of the 120-plus Long Island school districts' budgets passed. See the results here.
- The Say Cheese Pizza Cafe plans to open in Melville in the coming week, our Melissa Azofeifa reports.
- Several of our town's beaches are featured in our "Ultimate Guide to Long Island beaches 2026." What better time than the unofficial start of summer to browse the list?
