Delays at area airports after Long Island showers
Wednesday showers have delayed flights in and out of area airports but are forecast to wane overnight, according to the National Weather Service.
About 8:30 p.m. inbound flights to Kennedy Airport were delayed at their origin airports an average of one hour and 47 minutes according to the flight tracking site FlightAware. Departing flights were delayed "16 minutes to 30 minutes (and increasing) due to weather" an alert on the site reads.
Flights to LaGuardia Airport were either delayed at their departing airports an average of two hours and 51 minutes or delayed in the air an average of one hour and 48 minutes according to FlightAware. Flights departing the airport were delayed an average of one hour and 42 minutes.
A Town of Islip spokesperson did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding any delays at MacArthur Airport on Wednesday.
As of 4 p.m. MacArthur had collected just over a tenth of an inch of rain, while six-tenths of an inch were recorded at Kennedy, according to James Connolly, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Upton office.
The chance of showers will continue to decrease overnight as a low-pressure system carrying moisture from the Washington D.C. region weakens, he added.
Showers "and maybe a few thunderstorms mixed in," are anticipated to "heat up" again Thursday afternoon when temperatures hover around 70, Connolly said. It will be the same for late Friday afternoon as temperatures breach the low 70s.
Saturday calls for more showers as high temperatures reach the mid- to upper-70s, according to the NWS. Showers should finally break by Sunday morning, when the wind direction will change and warm temperatures will prevail, according to Connolly.
