American Airlines: Back in the air after computer issues grounded flights

American Airlines resumed flying to three major U.S. cities Thursday after computer "connectivity issues" forced it to ground planes, the company said.

The flights that were held departed about 2:30 p.m., a spokeswoman confirmed.

"Our operations have resumed" at Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago's O'Hare, and Miami International Airport, the spokeswoman said in an email several hours after the flights were grounded.

The Federal Aviation Administration on its website later estimated arriving and departing flights at Kennedy Airport were running about 15 minutes late due to residual and connection delays. Thursday night, flights were back on their scheduled departures and arrivals with standard delays.

American Airlines did not reveal details about why it had to ground the planes.
