Amtrak train derailment outside Penn Station results in delays
An Amtrak train derailed Wednesday afternoon outside Penn Station, causing delays on Amtrak and New Jersey Transit trains for up to an hour.
The FDNY reported no major injuries and said firefighters assisted one passenger in a wheelchair off a train.
Motorists near Penn Station can expect traffic delays, the FDNY said.
Amtrak officials said trains traveling in and out of Penn Station were delayed between 30 to 60 minutes after the derailment south of the station about 3 p.m.
New York City emergency officials said rail passengers should expect delays and cancellations in both directions between New York City and New Jersey.
All MTA and Long Island Rail Road trains were operating on or close to schedule, officials with the Metropolitan Transation Authority said.
"Crews are determining an estimated time for normal operations to resume," Amtrak officials said.
Additional details about the derailment were not immediately available.
At least two trains were canceled between Penn Station and Washington D.C., according to Amtrak.
Customers with reservations on affected trains will be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or rescheduled for another day, according to Amtrak. Customers looking to change their reservations during the modified schedule can do so by calling Amtrak's reservation center at 1-800-USA-RAIL. Amtrak said they will waive additional fees.
