A 19-year-old college student from Long Island was struck by a sport utility vehicle and killed while crossing a street last weekend in Cobleskill, authorities said.
The Schoharie County Sheriff's Office said Ashlee Reeves, 19, of Selden, a student at SUNY Cobleskill, was crossing West Main Street/State Route 7 in "an unilluminated crosswalk" just before 5 p.m. Saturday when she was fatally struck. The sheriff's office said in a statement emailed to Newsday Friday that Reeves was transported to the Albany Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the SUV was not injured.
The site where Reeves was struck is adjacent to the college campus. Posted signage indicates the speed limit in the area is 30 mph.
In a statement provided to Newsday on Friday, school officials said: "SUNY-Cobleskill Ag & Tech is mourning the loss of [a] student who passed away following a motor vehicle accident on State Route 7 Saturday evening. The Schoharie County Sheriff's Office, assisted by University Police, is leading the ongoing investigation. The college community has been notified, and counseling and support services are available to students, faculty, and staff."
The sheriff's office said no charges have been filed and is asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to call them at 518-295-8114.
