A man was seriously injured after his car struck a tractor trailer while it was backing into a parking lot in Bohemia on Thursday night, Suffolk County police said.

Around 8:42 p.m., the driver of a 2020 International tractor trailer was attempting to back up into a loading dock on Veterans Memorial Highway between Ninth and Fifth avenues, while blocking all lanes of traffic with hazard lights on, when an 2008 Chevrolet sedan traveling east in the right lane struck the trailer.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 41-year-old Hauppauge man, was airlifted via police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.

The Chevrolet was impounded for a safety check. Police conducted a post-crash investigation and released the tractor trailer to its owner.

Anyone with information on this crash is asked to contact Fifth Squad detectives at 631-854-8552.
